Car body lightweight design based on aluminium - towards harmonised aluminium alloy usage

Car body and chassis structures made of aluminium continue to be lighter than steel structures, despite increased performance of the comparatively cost-effective steels. Therefore, effective lightweight construction, which most OEMs see as a strategic project in various forms, is therefore often inextricably linked with the material aluminium.

However, aluminium lightweight construction is today generally associated with additional costs. Cost-efficient lightweight construction for small (future electric vehicles), medium-sized and large series requires the entire system to be considered holistically, including the material, the design and the manufacturing technology.

Additionally, with decreasing development times, CAE techniques are becoming increasingly important. The aim is to understand and capture all details relating to material characteristics in order to be able to represent complex component and vehicle simulations realistically. An excessive diversity of alloys that are not fully characterised presents a hurdle in this process. For improving the marketability of aluminium in car body construction it would be beneficial to use a small number of alloys that have been optimised for certain fields.

This is where the technical dialogue at this year's conference comes in:
  • To what extent is it possible to harmonise and standardise the application of
    aluminium alloys for certain applications?
  • Can material characteristics and test procedure be standardised?
  • Which aluminium materials and alloys are suitable?
  • Which tasks and challenges do those involved in the development of
associated standards face? Which risks and benefits are to be expected?

Including a guided tour through the Jaguar Land Rover Cars production, adjacent Q & A session.

The conference addresses:
Automotive engineers in pre-development, development, planning, as well as production at automotive manufacturers, being involved in the specification, selection, testing and processing of aluminium materials, as well as aluminium material suppliers and other interested stakeholders within this process.

Extra benefits:
  • Join the guided tour through the Jaguar Land Rover Cars press shop/body shop premises, plus Q & A session!
  • Take in active part in the interactive focus-workshops!
  • Profit from the know-how of the internationally leading network of automotive
    engineers

The Insight Edition
The new conference entitled "Automotive Circle International- Insight Edition" focuses on one special topic, exclusively discussed and presented by leading automobile manufacturers, one of them acting as host of this very special event. An issue of general automobile manufacturer's interest will be addressed so that new ideas, solutions and viewpoints can be exchanged and discussed to the benefit of the whole industry.

Travel Information
Birmingham is the definition of a modern and connected international city and Birmingham International Airport is one of the most accessible airports in Europe. Over 50 airlines operate scheduled and charter services to more than 100 destinations within Europe. If you go by train, you should arrive at Birmingham New Street Station, which is the hub of the UK rail network. New Street Station offers regular services to and from every major UK destination, bringing the whole country within easy reach. For example: London is less than 2 hours away. Delegates who plan on driving will find a modern infrastructure with the motorways M6, M42, M54 and M5, whereby the M6 takes you directly to the venue. London-Birmingham: approx 2,5 hours.
