Conference - World Automotive Material Meeting

29 - 30 May 2008
Hotel Dolce, Bad Nauheim/ Frankfurt

6th International Strategy Conference

"WORLD AUTOMOTIVE MATERIAL MEETING"

Steel as lightweight material competing with aluminium, magnesium, and fibrereinforced plastics

Highest lightweight quality in focus of future volume series automobile manufacture!

The objective of future-oriented volume series automobile manufacture is to make the transition from "relative" to "real" automotive lightweight design!

Status qou:
Most car bodies of new series models, as presented at the EuroCarBody 2007, are "slightly heavier" than the predecessor. Only few new vehicles are significantly weight reduced - seemingly innovative lightweight design is therefore only "relative".

Future demands:
Compared to the predecessor up to 30% weight reduction but identical technology performance, thus "real" and sustainable lightweight design - an ambitious target requiring innovative design for all automobile components. OEM boards are expecting feasible contributions from car body shops to lower fleet consumption!

The concerns about distinctive weight reduction by using more aluminium and composite components are: Higher material costs and the subsequent constraints to lower production costs may cause certain technological risks.

What's up the pipeline?
Regarding the growing importance of environmental sustainability, all strategic, economic and engineering concepts must be reevaluated! Automobile manufacturers must see increasingly stringent environmental requirements as a competitive edge, realign priorities and come up with new OPTIONS for "real" LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN.
