An emerging trend in Body in white (BIW) design is the use of more and larger aluminium castings, up to mega or gigacastings, which reduces the complexity of BIW production.
Some of the newly available aluminium castings are heat treatment free alloys which save cost, energy and time, but present a joining challenge due to reduced ductility, particularly when combined with high strength steels. Joining technology is the key technology that enables the use of such materials in BIW.
